Our Engagement Story

After nine years of dating, I couldn’t be more excited to start this next chapter with my soon to be husband. September 06, 2020 will forever be a date I will cherish. I thought I’d share our engagement story, wedding plans that we have so far and a glimpse of our engagement pictures that I adore so much.

HOW DID HE PROPOSE?

It was Labor Day weekend, we hadn’t had a date night in a while due to our busy schedules so Quentin had asked me to free up that weekend so we could spend some time together on Sunday. I didn’t know where we’d be going exactly but I didn’t ask too many questions because I could tell he was planning a special night for us. All I knew was to be ready by 4:00 so we can head into town which isn’t unusual for us since we love exploring Houston. He ended up taking me to the Bayou Bend collection and gardens. It’s a garden that is connected to MFAH, (Museum of Fine Arts, Houston) a house museum for American arts & paintings. I thought that we’d be going the museum itself but he told me that we’d actually be exploring the garden instead. (located directly behind the fine arts building) The garden was so beautiful and vividly green since it had just rained a few hours before. Walking around the garden took us back to our Portland, Oregon trip where we explored the Japanese garden near Washington Park. We walked and talked about how much we loved that trip and took photos of all the statues elegantly placed throughout the area. The gardens are meant to reflect the country place era (1880-1920).

After we had walked around the garden we headed back to the car. When you exit and enter the gardens there is a gorgeous suspension bridge that overlooks the bayou. He suggested we take a selfie on the bridge, the sun was in our eyes where we were standing so I found the perfect spot for us and snapped our selfie. I continued to walk towards the car after we took our picture but didn’t feel him walking with me, I turned around and saw that he was on his knee, ring in hand and all I can remember is him nervously asking me “Will you marry me?” My first reaction was to get him off the ground (lol) and give him the biggest hug. Tears filled my eyes as we hugged on this bridge, I could barely speak but I said yes and he put the ring on my finger. It all happened so fast. I’ve never felt so many happy emotions all at once. I had no idea this would happen while we were there. I remember smiling so hard while staring at my hand, absolutely in love with my ring that he picked out for me, thinking to myself “is this really happening?”

WHAT HAPPENED AFTER?

We went to dinner after the proposal, I wanted to take in this moment with him so we stayed off our phones and enjoyed dinner just us two. I found out that he had the ring for a week and talked to my dad the day before he proposed to get his blessing. After dinner I called my two closest friends, Callie and Karina and told them the news, everything felt real as soon as I talked to them. I called my mom, dad and my cousin Carla as we left Houston. We spent the evening at my brothers place where I couldn’t wait to share the news with my two nieces who I love so much.

OUR ENGAGEMENT SHOOT

I am a planner 100% so not even a week after he proposed I knew that I wanted to book our engagement pictures. I had found Nadine Berns (Just Like Honey) on Instagram last year through mutual friends who had worked with her and knew that if I ever got engaged, she would definitely work with us. I emailed her and she booked us for October. I was so excited because we have been together for so long but have never had our photos professionally taken so this was long overdue. I let her have 100% creative control and I love how they turned out. We only have less than a handful of photos so far, but we’re already in love with them and can’t wait to get all of the photos once she’s done editing. We ended up booking her for our wedding day and my bridals. She made us feel comfortable instantly and truly has a gift for capturing those candid “in between moments”. I highly recommend her!!

ANY WEDDING PLANS?

So far we have a date, 11/07/2021. It’ll be in Houston on a Sunday evening. We have a wedding planner, photographer and videographer booked. Oh, and I have the dress! Our next step is touring a potential venue. We want to get the “big things” taken care of this year so next year is mainly focusing on the smaller details. This is such an exciting journey for us both, stay tuned!
